Registration Now Open for the 5th Annual Lowcountry Pie Getaway 2018

Registration for this year’s Lowcountry Pie Getaway in gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina is officially open and we sincerely hope you will join us.

We’ll mark this special anniversary with several surprises, including an exciting new afternoon class on Sunday dedicated to those classic pies so many of us adore – Great American Cream Pies.

The Getaway is your chance to meet, mingle and bake alongside other passionate pie makers from across the country. You’ll make plenty of new friends at what we collectively agree feels like one big family reunion. Or you can bring one of your own friends. Past attendees have included a number of best friends and spouses.

For many, the Getaway has proven to be the elusive link between their pie making aspirations and the pies of their dreams. We attract both experienced pie makers and complete novices. Indeed, some of our most wonderful pies have been baked by those who never before made a pie. All are welcome, and the small class size and personal attention means you’ll learn at your level.

Our Host City and Venue

Once again Charleston, South Carolina will be our host city. Charleston has all the ingredients we need for a memorable experience. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, melt-your-heart hospitable, and rich in history. The city casts a spell visitors never forget.

On top of that, our host facility – the studio kitchen owned by our friend Chef Bob Waggoner – could not be more perfect for our needs. It is centrally located – the horse-drawn carriages clip-clop by every few minutes – and the kitchen is spacious and impressively outfitted. Our attendees are in awe.

The Lowcountry Pie Getaway at a Glance

This being our fifth Getaway, we’ve had plenty of practice to work out the kinks and streamline the schedule in order to give you the best possible experience. So here, more or less, is what you can expect

Friday evening, October 12th – 5:00PM to 7:00PM

-Special Welcome Reception – We’ll convene at our host facility and be greeted by Ken and his wife, Bev. You’ll have a chance to tour our kitchen, meet your fellow pie makers, and enjoy beverages and light appetizers. We’ll chat about what’s in store for the weekend and answer any questions you may have prior to getting underway. (Spouses and other non-attendee guests are welcome to attend the Reception. Please indicate guests on your registration form.)

Saturday, October 13th – 9:00AM to 3:00PM

-Saturday morning. We’ll begin by immersing ourselves in pie crusts – talking about them, making them, and watching Ken demonstrate key techniques for preparing the perfect pie pastry. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of food processors and the KitchenAid mixer in the preparation of pie dough, and examine the critical aspects of making pie dough by hand. You’ll prepare several crusts of your own and, by noon, you’ll feel like a pie pastry hero.

-Saturday lunch at our host facility

-Saturday afternoon. We’ll turn on the ovens, gather our ingredients, and put our newfound pie knowledge into practice designing a signature fruit pie of our own. Working with a variety of fruits, spices, and extras – including your own crust – you’ll create a custom pie to share at Sunday night’s Pie & Ice Cream Social. This is your chance to shine and show off your pie chops. You’ll have a blast comparing notes and watching everyone’s pies take shape. (And an even bigger blast when you get to sample them!)

Other Saturday topics will include a discussion of how to avoid a dough-rolling meltdown; a thorough look at various pie pans; and whether or not you need to weigh your ingredients.

-Saturday dinner on your own 

Sunday, October 14th – 9:00AM to 3:00PM

Sunday morning. This morning we’ll take a savory turn and prepare a variety of dinner pies. You will pick a baking partner and choose one of several savory pies from Ken’s Dinner Pies book or his latest book, The Harvest Baker – galettes, hand pies, slab pies, and quiches among them. We’ll work up a good appetite, so when these pies come out of the oven by lunchtime, we’ll be ready to dig in. Our Sunday savory session has proved to be one of the highlights of the Getaway.

-Sunday lunch at our host facility

-Sunday afternoon. We’ll cap off our Lowcountry Pie Getaway 2018 with a new session this year called Great American Cream Pies. Ken will demonstrate his master recipe, then we’ll form teams and create a variety of flavored mini cream pies and garnish them to perfection. If you’re not already a fan of these American classics, you will be! We’ll follow this session with a sit-down Q&A wrap up.

-Sunday evening. As in years past, we’ll meet at our host facility for our special Sunday Send-Off Dinner, prepared by our guest chef, followed by a Pie & Ice Cream Social (Spouses and other non-attendee guests are welcome to attend the Send-Off Dinner. The cost per guest/spouse is $100 per person all-inclusive. Space is limited as this is a sit down dinner.)

Charleston Accommodations

Charleston offers a myriad of choices for lodging, from high end hotels to historic inns and Airbnb type rentals. Not everyone has the same taste or budget, so we like to leave the accommodations to you.

In addition to downtown Charleston, there are options in nearby Mt. Pleasant, a short drive away. If you do stay there you’ll need transportation to downtown.

The 2018 Lowcountry Pie Getaway includes a great package of instruction and extras – see below – but neither transportation or accommodations are included.

If you’re flying, you’ll want to land at Charleston International Airport, about a 20 minute ride to downtown. If you’re not renting a car, just take a cab.

If you’re staying downtown and don’t plan any excursions outside of Charleston, you probably don’t need to rent a car. Charleston is one of the best walking town in the country, but bring comfortable walking shoes because you’ll be on your feet a lot and there are many uneven cobblestone streets to cross.

-Two hands-on, fun-filled, instruction-packed days of pie making with your host, Ken Haedrich, Dean of The Pie Academy and Julia Child Cookbook Award winner.

-All of your ingredients for a weekend of pie making.

-Continental-style breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, served at our host facility.

-Special Sunday Send-Off Dinner prepared by our guest chef (to be announced) followed by our Pie & Ice Cream Social.

Send an email to Bev – – and request a Lowcountry Pie Getaway registration form. Fill it out and email or mail it back to us. After you return your completed registration form we will email you a PayPal invoice. You may also pay by check. You’ll find the details on the registration form.

Like all of our Pie Getaways, last year’s event was a huge success, thanks in no small measure to the wonderful host city and venue. We expect no less of this year’s event.

But please note: we expect to fill up quickly. As large as our Charleston kitchen is, when all spots are filled we will promptly close registration. Limiting attendance is the only way we can insure that the instruction is kept personal and the experience feels intimate for all. So let us know as soon as possible if you’re planning to come.
